Is chewing gum a substitute for brushing? Here’s what you should know

Recently, Dr. Fernando Franch appeared on television to talk about the role of chewing gum in oral health. In his speech, he clarified a very important issue that often generates confusion: chewing gum is not a method of oral hygiene.

Chewing gum as a temporary support, not as a substitute

Although chewing gum, especially sugarless gum, can be useful in specific cases, it should not be considered an alternative to brushing. The act of chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva, which plays a key role in reducing caries. Saliva helps neutralize acids in the mouth, which helps reduce bacterial growth and plaque buildup on the teeth.

In the absence of a toothbrush, such as when we are away from home and proper cleaning is not possible, sugarless chewing gum can be a resource to reduce the amount of plaque and protect tooth enamel. However, this does not mean that it replaces the complete hygiene that only brushing and flossing can provide.

The importance of proper oral hygiene

For optimal oral health, it is essential to brush your teeth at least twice a day and to complement this with the use of dental floss and mouthwash. Only in this way can we ensure deep cleaning and avoid diseases such as gingivitis, caries and other periodontal pathologies.

Remember: chewing gum can be an occasional support, but should never be considered as an alternative to full oral hygiene. Don’t forget that, although chewing gum can help at certain times, there is no substitute for brushing.
